Motor insurance: Police launch initiative to beat work accidents

Thursday, 25 October 2007

A new campaign has been launched by police as they look to minimise the number of accidents involving company vehicles.

Now the force will check out a number of items on cars that are owned by firms but driven by their staff, such as seeing whether or not the organisations have the relevant insurance, reports the Times.

This follows research that was carried out recently by the Health and Safety Executive, which claimed 20 people are killed each week on the roads after incidents involving work vehicles.

Superintendant Mark Bird from the traffic unit at the Metropolitan Police said that a lot is being done to try and stop such things occurring.

"More and more we carry out follow-up investigations with companies after collisions, to ensure that work-related road safety is embedded within company policies," he commented to the paper.

Recently, Network rail stated that it is to put a car wreckage from Top Gear in the National Railway Museum in York in an attempt to make people more aware of safety issues.

Employees involved in collisions should ensure that they have good car insurance, as should their employers.
