Travel insurance: Adventure seekers 'neglect insurance'

Wednesday, 26 July 2006

Adventure seekers often neglect to purchase travel insurance when they embark on extreme activities, claims new research.

A study conducted by a leading travel insurance provider discovered that 16 per cent of people taking part in an adventure holiday this year will not have an adequate travel insurance policy – adding up to a total of 2.24 million people.

In particular, people fail to realise that cycling holidays are regarded as an adventure trip, with 19 per cent admitting they don't plan to purchase cover. This fell to just three per cent amongst scuba drivers who generally regard travel insurance as a vital holiday expense.

Travel insurance can help to cover the cost of unexpected medical treatment as well as protecting against stolen belongings or lost baggage.

Pat Brady, travel insurance manager of the company that conducted the research, said: "Travel insurance is a necessity for anyone holidaying abroad, especially if you plan to take part in any adventure activities.

"Travel insurance does not have to be expensive, and it should help ensure that if you do encounter problems on holiday, the disruption and cost is kept to a minimum."
