Advice on Flooding

Wednesday, 28 November 2012

If you live in a flood risk area or think your home may be at risk of flooding we’ve put together some tips on how you can prepare your home as well as what to do in the event of a flood.

Live in a flood risk area?

• Consider signing up to Floodline, the flood warning alert service. You can either sign up to the service online or call them on 0845 988 1188

• Keep your important documents, including home insurance policy documents, upstairs in your home or at a high level, preferably in a waterproof container

• Prepare an emergency kit in case you’re stuck in your home. You may want to include waterproof clothes, non-perishable food, bottled water and any medication that you take

• Have a battery-powered radio available so that you are able to receive local alerts

• Keep your mobile phone fully charged – and make sure you have saved useful numbers that you may need such as your insurers claim line

• Ensure you know how to turn off gas, electricity, oil-fired heating and water. It’s also worth knowing how to do this in the dark

• It may be worth investing in flood protection items for your home. A good DIY store may stock flood sacks or sand bags for example

Affected by a flood?

• Turn off your water, gas and electricity supplies

• Unplug all of your electrical items.

• Any smaller electrical items should be moved out of the reach of water and put up high or upstairs

• Put plugs into sinks and weigh them down with something heavy

• Move any light furniture upstairs

• Personal possessions and valuables should also be moved somewhere safe

• If you can, roll up rugs and carpets and put them upstairs

• Leave internal doors open

• If there is no time to take down curtains, consider hanging them over the curtain rail to keep them above the flood water

• Weigh down manhole covers outside to prevent them floating away and leaving a hazardous hole

• Cars should also be moved to higher ground to help avoid any damage

If you have been affected by a flood and need to register a home insurance claim by phone, call 0871 559 1609*

*Lines are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call costs may vary depending on your service provider.
