Travel insurance: Africa 'holiday hotspot' for Britons
Friday, 10 November 2006
Holidaymakers planning to join in the African tourist boom are being reminded to make sure they have adequate travel insurance before jetting off.
Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the number of Brits visiting at least one country in Africa increased by 25.9 per cent to total 2.3 million last year – a sign that many travellers are keen to enjoy more adventurous vacations.
Egypt emerged as a key destination for both holiday and business trips as the number visiting the African country rose by 63.5 per cent to equal 564,000 visits. Meanwhile, 278,000 trips were made to other parts of north Africa and 449,000 to South Africa.
In total, the OBS data shows that 66.4 million trips abroad were made by UK residents, with a growing trend of consumers opting to make their own travel arrangements rather than relying on package holidays.
Anyone planning a trip abroad is reminded to make sure they have sufficient travel insurance cover before leaving the UK. Purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance policy could help to cover expensive emergency medical treatment as well as offering compensation for any lost or stolen belongings.
