Motor insurance: Drivers fight back against speed cameras

Tuesday, 13 May 2008

Motorists in Stockton are banded together over what they believe to be an incorrect speed camera.

The group consists of 47 motorists who have received notifications of intent to prosecute by the local police.

Each of the offenders were caught on a speed camera re-calibrated to catch road users going above 50mph on the A66; however, road signs informing drivers about the change were placed after the camera itself.

Linda Greenwood, of Redcar, east Cleveland, said of her experiences with the camera: "I thought nothing of it, as the 50-sign was still after the camera. I double-checked this the next day. A week later the sign was moved, so it was before the camera. I received a notice of intent to prosecute on April 15."

Drivers caught speeding may find their car insurance premiums are affected.

In related news, Newham is to see the roll out of a new form of speed camera that uses wi-fi technology to record a motorist's average speed between two points.
