Travel insurance: Airlines 'will charge for extra services'
Tuesday, 03 March 2009
People who take out travel insurance every year for a trip abroad will probably find airlines are increasingly likely to start charging for added extras, it has been reported.
According to the Air Transport Users Council, carriers are beginning to ask customers to pay for services separately.
Industry affairs manager James Fremantle said the trend does not just apply to low-cost companies.
He stated: "Airlines like BA are starting to copy what the no-frills airlines do and it is obviously what the consumers want, so airlines are doing that."
Mr Fremantle also pointed out these changes had been occurring before the recession kicked in.
This comes after the Daily Telegraph reported Ryanair was planning to get rid of all of its check-in desk staff by the end of 2009.
Airline chief executive Michael O'Leary told the newspaper this would result in lower baggage fees for passengers who would be required to check in online.
