Motorists could be less likely to need to claim on their car insurance if drink drive warning labels were placed on alcoholic drinks.

That's according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists, which is calling for the drinks industry to do more to stamp out the problem, which costs almost 400 lives a year.

Launching its annual Christmas drink drive campaign, the motoring body explains that one in five drivers killed in crashes in 2009 was over the legal limit.

Chief executive Simon Best says drink driving is an "epidemic" and that the drinks industry must not "soften" the road safety message.

He is calling for "clear drink driving warnings that are just as hard hitting as health warnings on cigarette labels".
