Motor insurance customers across the UK will have to be on their best behaviour following the introduction of a new hi-tech speed camera.

The Gatso speed camera has the ability to catch drivers committing five offences at once on the highways of Britain.

But the new multi-functional 'asset' system allows the camera to capture out of date tax discs, tailgating traffic, drivers without car insurance, and people who are not wearing safety belts.

A spokesperson for Speed Cameras Dot Org said: "We cautiously welcome a device that can detect several potential motoring offences, but it remains to be seen how accurate it is and how fairly it will be used."

This news comes after an initiative was unveiled by Essex Police, which utilises automatic number plate recognition technology to track down those that are not wearing their seatbelts.

On the scheme's first day of action, a total of 19 people were reprimanded for not wearing a seatbelt, whereas seven were stopped for talking on their mobile phone during a drive.
