Almost two-fifths of drivers admit to using their phones while driving, according to research by confused.com.

The website's report revealed that around 50 per cent of car insurance owners stated that they ensure they can see their mobile while behind the wheel of a vehicle.

On top of this, over a fifth of UK drivers check their phones every 15 minutes or more, yet over 40 per cent get agitated when they receive an incoming call or text while they are on the road.

Head of car insurance at confused.com, Gareth Kloet, said: "Using these devices while driving is incredibly dangerous and apps such as DriveSafe.ly, which are designed to protect drivers, should be welcomed."

Recently, research by Brake revealed that one in three car insurance owners admit to texting while behind the wheel.

On top of this, one in 13 drivers stated that they do this dangerous activity at least once a week.
