Car insurance: Camera set on fire

Monday, 07 April 2008

Vandals have targeted another speed camera, this time in the Burton area of Staffordshire, it has been revealed.

They placed tyres at the bottom of the device and then lit these, leading to damage being sustained so that it would not work, reported the Burton Mail.

Such instances should be discouraged and this will not help anybody, a spokesman at Staffordshire Casualty Reduction Partnership suggested.

"People who vandalise or damage the cameras should know that they are potentially putting people's lives at risk," he told the publication.

However, he also noted that such destruction is a rare occurrence and that a low number of devices have been targeted in the past.

This particular camera has been successful in preventing accidents on the stretch of Ashby Road, he remarked.

Last week, a poll carried out by the Safety Camera Unit in Wiltshire found that a large number of locals would welcome the introduction of speed cameras.

Drivers caught speeding may find that their motor insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
