Home insurance: Ask experts about DIY

Sunday, 27 May 2012

A DIY expert has advocated an approach of seeking tips from those in the know before embarking on the sort of DIY project designed to increase a house's price.

Home insurance holders on a mission to add extra pounds to their property's value via improvements should go and talk to people who know about the immediate area's housing market, said Build It + Home Improvement magazine's Anna-Marie DeSouza.

The editor recommended that potential DIY-ers should fill themselves in on exactly what sort of projects were likely to be lucrative, by talking to estate agents.

"Ask them questions about what will add value to your house, what is popular in your area and what is going to make buyers give you that extra £2,000," Ms DeSouza said.

She also commented that although properties would become more valuable when home insurance holders took steps to make them better,  people should calculate the relationship between this increased worth and how much money would be needed to complete the job in the first place.

"You need to think about what you're going to use and what people are going to be looking for when you sell on the home, and balance those against each other," she added.
