Travel insurance: Avoid chaos this Christmas

Saturday, 19 December 2009

Travel insurance customers should be prepared for all eventualities this winter, the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA) advises.

It is calling on holidaymakers to check their travel insurance policies so they are aware of what they are, and are not, covered for.

"There is a lot of potential misery for many families travelling over the festive period, however, cover is available through insurance brokers to protect against future unforeseen strikes or financial failures," explained Graeme Trudgill, BIBA technical and corporate affairs executive.

Recent threats of strikes by British Airways (BA) cabin crew and the collapse of Scotland-based airline Flyglobespan have caused concern for many travellers.

These issues highlight the need for consumers to focus on the cover offered by their travel insurance provider, and not just the price, Mr Trudgill added.

The BA strikes were yesterday declared illegal by the High Court because of the balloting process carried out by union Unite, but disputes between the airline and staff are ongoing.
