Now that winter is on its way, Brits need to make sure that that they have taken steps to avoid suffering the despair of frozen and burst pipes when the cold weather hits.

Two years ago, the temperatures were abnormally low and there were around 3,500 home insurance claims made every day for the damage caused when water froze in pipes and led to them bursting, according to research by the Association of British Insurers.

As well as being an expensive situation to resolve, it can be very stressful and disruptive to homeowners, but they can do their best to avoid it by guaranteeing their pipes and tanks are properly insulated.

In addition, residents will need to ensure they know where the stopcock is and repair any taps that drip.

Nick Starling, ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "Every winter freezing temperatures catch people out. Prevention is better than cure and now is the time to take a few simple steps to reduce the risk of facing the trauma of frozen or burst pipes this winter."
