Travel insurance: Advice for those affected by BA strike
Tuesday, 16 March 2010
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued advice to holidaymakers who may be affected by forthcoming industrial action against British Airways (BA).
Unite, the trade union for cabin crews has announced that strikes are planned to take place on the three days from March 20th and the four days from March 27th.
The ABI has advised people who had booked to fly with BA on those dates to check their travel insurance policy to see what they are covered for.
Those who took out their travel policy before March 12th, when the dates for the strike action were confirmed, may be covered if their flight is delayed. Some policies may pay a fixed lump sum if any delay forces travel plans to be cancelled.
However, travel insurance policies taken out after March 12th will not offer cover, as the strike action was known beforehand.
Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "Anyone who is likely to be affected should discuss their options with British Airways, who are responsible for flight arrangements, and, if necessary, their tour operator or travel agent."
