Motor insurance: Bad weather prompts warning

Wednesday, 12 March 2008

Drivers have been urged to get an adequate level of car insurance in the wake of the recent disastrous weather conditions to hit the UK by uSwitch.com.

In the south-west alone, it noted, those looking to renew their deals could be hit with increases of 40 per cent in the home insurance field.

But it is just as important to check that car insurance is in place, insurance expert at uSwitch.com Ashton Berkhauer suggested, in the case of events such as flooding.

"We shouldn't just be concerned about our homes. uSwitch.com data indicates that 1.7 million cars are also at risk of flood damage throughout the country. There are almost one million vehicles in the south-west with third-party cover only," he commented.

He added that if vehicles are smashed when hit by "debris" or falling items after strong winds, they would not be covered under these deals.

The UK has been hit by a series of storms this week, with winds in some areas reaching 80mph.
