Be safe and avoid whiplash

Tuesday, 24 January 2012

Last week, the government said that it should be harder for drivers to make claims for whiplash injuries from now on, as they are hard to prove and make up the majority of claims after accidents.

Now, the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has said that people can avoid the need to make car insurance claims for the injury by driving safely and following a few simple tips.

The charity's top tips include keeping an eye on the car behind to make sure that not to be hit in the rear if you brake quickly, and adjusting the headrest properly to be certain that everyone's necks are well protected.

IAM head of training Simon Elstow said: "The rise in whiplash compensation claims is driving up car insurance. Avoid injury and a hit to your insurance premium by following the above advice."

Other tips for avoiding whiplash include keeping a good distance between cars and slowing down gradually to avoid sharp braking.
