Black box recorders 'could punish those driving without car insurance'

Friday, 09 July 2010

Black box recorders could be used as an adequate punishment for those who have a history of driving without car insurance, it has been suggested.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), was commenting amid news computer hardware company Intel is developing a new car fitted with aircraft-style intelligent black box recorders.

They have been designed to assist with motor insurance claims and police matters following an accident.

"Ultimately, the people who would really appreciate having this sort of stuff are the ones least likely to have it, i.e. the ones driving without insurance or any care for other people at all," said Mr Greig.

He added that people with a record of driving without car insurance could perhaps be forced to install a black box in their vehicle by a court in order to reduce the chances and occurrence of uninsured drivers and accidents.

However, Mr Greig said there were some concerns surrounding black boxes too.

It would help with "nose-to-tail type shunts" and simple things people get wrong in motor insurance claims but it may not be able to record all the steps leading up to the incident in order to determine fault.
