British holidaymakers saved themselves billions of pounds on their jaunts across the world last year by cutting out travel agents and booking their trips direct.

According to research from Santander Cars, travel insurance customers pocketed GBP4.92 billion collectively by avoiding the middleman and undertaking most of the organisation themselves.

Nearly half of the 25 million holidaymakers who headed to foreign climes last year reduced the cost of the trip by booking flights and accommodation either by phone or online.

Emma Roberts, director of Santander Cards, said that the financial strain many travel insurance customers find themselves under at present has meant many have looked to save money any way they can.

"It's not surprising that in the current economic climate, holidaymakers are increasingly looking for value and are prepared to do the homework themselves in order to get the best deal," she stated.

Ms Roberts added that many Brits are asking for upgrades and other perks in order to make the most of their time abroad.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19642615-ADNFCR
