Travel insurance: The end for booze cruises
Monday, 13 November 2006
The practice of popping over to Calais in the car and stocking up on cheap alcohol may soon stop as the EU courts decide whether to allow duty-free booze to be bought off the internet.
If the court gives this the go-ahead then shoppers in Britain will be able to buy cigarettes and alcohol from countries in mainland Europe without paying high duty rates.
UK shoppers will be able to compare prices online, as they already do with travel insurance, without the need for travel although some say that the fun of booze cruises will keep the practice alive.
A spokesman for the Treasury said there was no point in speculating because "the court does not always follow the Advocate-General's opinion and that it is just that - an opinion."
Booze cruises are run from Portsmouth to Cherbourg, Dover to Calais and Hull to Rotterdam by various companies. As with any expedition, it is vital to shop online for cheap travel insurance.
