There has been a dramatic increase in the number of breakdown callouts by car insurance customers in the UK over the last few days, new figures show.

The AA received 25,000 call-outs on Monday, November 29th - which is the busiest day for that month on record at the breakdown recovery firm.

More than 100,000 call-outs have been responded to over the days since Thursday, November 25th, with many car insurance customers left stranded for several hours in parts of the UK.

Yesterday (November 30th), the AA attended around 1,600 callouts every hour before 12:30, although the company expects evenings to see the worst of problems.

AA patrol of the year, Paul Leather, urged drivers to heed the advice of police about whether or not to travel.

He explained: "If you are driving on icy roads, try to minimise the use of brakes to reduce the risk of sliding - keep your speed down, stay in a higher gear to aid traction, anticipate hazards, and keep well apart from other vehicles."
