Drivers in the Brislington and Knowle areas of Bristol have reduced the number of car journeys they make by 11 per cent since April last year, it has been claimed.

Sustainable transport charity Sustrans offered motor insurance customers personalised travel information, including walking and cycling routes and public transport links.

The move was part of a project called TravelSmart and the result was an 11 per cent decrease in journeys by car, while cycling trips jumped by more than a quarter.

There was also a 14 per cent increase in the number of people travelling on foot, while public transport trips rose by 13 per cent.

Lizzie Thal-Jantzen, project officer at Sustrans, said the results are encouraging and show that car insurance customers are happy to explore alternative e methods of travel whenever possible.

"With the right information and support, walking, cycling or getting on a bus or train can become the easiest and quickest ways of getting around, not to mention having positive benefits for people's health," she added.
