Car insurance: Britain's busiest speed cameras unveiled

Friday, 01 January 2010

Britain's busiest Gatso speed camera has raked in £2,3 million in five years, it has been estimated.

Located at the bottom of the M11 in Essex, the camera has flashed more than 38,000 drivers breaking the 50mph speed limit over a five-year period - with each being issued a £60 fixed-penalty ticket.

Other hotspots include Nottinghamshire, where a camera made around £1.4 million over three years, and one in Surrey which made £773,000 over the same length of time.

The news was revealed after the Information Commissioner ordered camera partnerships to release figures for their most profitable cameras.

The figures have been criticised by motor insurance customers and anti-speed camera campaign groups, who claim Gatsos are more about making money than improving road safety.

A Motorists Against Detection spokesperson said: "They ought to have a pound sign printed on the side because money is what they are about."

There are approximately 6,000 across the country, 2,500 of which are mobile speed cameras, according to national database
