Many of the older generation are taking a leaf out of young people's books and heading away on gap year adventures, it has been claimed.

According to Lauren Mackay, from Real Gap, many middle-aged and elderly members of society are keen to experience far-flung destinations rather than put their feet up and relax.

Many have been inspired by their younger counterparts' adventures across the globe and are deciding to enjoy fulfilling experiences in sunnier climes, she claims.

"In general, nowadays people are healthier, fitter and more active in later life [older people] want to see and experience the places that they have heard so much about," Ms Mackay says.

Recent research by the Post Office found that the older generation are the most intrepid travellers, with 48 per cent admitting they have gatecrashed their child's gap year or holiday, although 14 per cent of those questioned admitting to difficulties in obtaining travel insurance cover.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19580690-ADNFCR
