Brits put homes at risk from cold

Friday, 03 February 2012

With a cold snap predicted for much of Britain this coming week, the majority of homeowners could be putting their property at risk of damage through not turning on heating.

After energy bills were increased by an average of 21 per cent between 2010 and 2011, 83 per cent have opted to cut down on what they spend on their energy bills, according to uSwitch.

It also said that 75 per cent have kept heating off at some point deliberately this winter, with 72 per cent saying that they had felt cold at some point in their own house.

Those who leave their heating switched off could risk burst pipes and floods at home leading to home insurance claims.

This week, the Met Office has put large parts of the country on cold weather alert, with Scotland and large parts of the north of England being told to prepare for the possibility of snow this weekend.
