Car Insurance: Brits 'more safety-conscious than other Europeans'

Wednesday, 03 December 2008

British drivers may be more likely to qualify for cheap car insurance than their European counterparts because they have a greater awareness of road safety, new research has suggested.

A road behaviour survey by Swiftcover's parent company Axa interviewed 800 motorists from Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal and the UK.

The study found 92 per cent of Brits thought using a mobile phone behind the wheel without a hands-free kit was dangerous, compared to 85 per cent of drivers from the rest of Europe.

Similarly, 92 per cent of motorists in the UK considered drink-driving to be unacceptable, versus 85 per cent of other European road users.

The majority of British drivers also said they would welcome the introduction of in-built sensors to force cars to drive within the speed limit.

Marketing director Tina Shortle stated: "As an exclusively online company with a focus on using technology to make insurance simpler and faster, Swiftcover supports all in-car enhancements to ensure our drivers are kept safe."

In other news, a previous study by the insurer revealed one in eight Brits find driving to work the most stressful regular journey they make.
