Car insurance: UK's worst speeding culprits revealed
Tuesday, 26 January 2010
Drivers convicted of speeding could see the cost of their car insurance premiums almost double, according to new research.
The poll by moneysupermarket.com also reveals the UK's worst speeding culprits, with drivers in Scotland, Swindon and Sheffield taking the top spots.
Boy racers in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, are the worst offenders - with over half of all the speeding convictions belonging to male drivers aged 17 to 21.
Also racing ahead of the pack are thirty-something men in Swindon and Sheffield, with the highest number of speeding convictions in those areas.
However, there were no female drivers anywhere near the top of the table.
Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "Speeding does increase accident rates so it's hardly surprising insurers view a conviction dimly".
He warned that speeding convictions can mean points on your licence and can potentially double your insurance premium, as well as landing you with a fine of up to £1,000.
An order from the Information Commissioner recently revealed the UK's busiest speed cameras, including one in Essex which raked in £2.3 million over five years.
