Home insurance customers warned about top burglary areas

Home insurance customers have been warned about the UK's theft hotspots.

According to research by moneysupermarket.com, the Manchester postcode M21 around Chorlton-cum-Hardy is the theft capital of the UK, with one in 11 households in the area making a claim during 2009.

Other areas in the top 20 included ten postcodes in London, including Blackheath, Hammersmith and Finsbury Park which claimed the second, third and fourth spots.

Roundhay in Leeds completed the top five.

However, residents in Chorlton-cum-Hardy have denied that the area is a magnet for burglars.

Pete Williams, a worker at a organic food co-operative, told the Guardian: "I think they have got it wrong. This is one of the safest places in Manchester. It has become a very sought-after area, with a lot of people who can't afford Didsbury moving here. I lived in London for ten years and was burgled twice, I've lived here for 15 years and never had a burglary."

Last month, moneysupermarket.com warned Brits to check their home insurance policies offer them comprehensive cover.
