More car insurance customers 'buying low-emission cars'
Wednesday, 12 May 2010
More car insurance customers are buying low-emission cars, leading to the average new-car CO2 levels falling faster than ever, new data has revealed.
The average CO2 emissions across Europe have dropped by 20g/km to 145.9g/km, according to data from JATO Dynamics, the leading provider of effective data and intelligence to the automotive industry.
Demand from motor insurance customers for more fuel-efficient cars has, in part, contribution to the emissions level reduction.
Some countries in Europe now have CO2-based taxes, which has increased green car demand and the scrappage schemes in Europe led to lower-emission cars being bought.
Half of all the new cars sold to car insurance policyholders in the 21 countries whose data was analysed produce 140g/km of CO2 or less compared with 23 per cent in 2003.
This means that Europe should be on track to meet the European Union target emissions levels by 2015, according to JATO.
