Car insurance: Camera car to help catch bad drivers
Monday, 22 March 2010
A new GBP70,000 camera car could help authorities in Plymouth catch drivers who are flouting the law and endangering other road users.
The new Toyota Aygo camera car, which is the result of a link between Plymouth City Council and the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership, will be looking out for drivers who are ignoring parking restrictions, using mobile phones, jumping red lights, speeding, driving in bus lanes and not wearing seatbelts.
All of these offences can lead to people getting fined and points on their driving licence, which could impact on the price of their car insurance.
However, currently Plymouth City Council has no plans to pass video footage of the motoring offences on to the police, reports the Plymouth Herald.
Speaking to the news provider, a spokeswoman for the Devon and Cornwall Safety Camera Partnership said: "The main objective is to increase driver awareness, act as a deterrent and improve public safety."
Last week, it was reported that Thames Valley Police have launched an anti-mobile campaign to target those using a mobile phone while driving.
