Motor insurance: Two cameras are set alight

Monday, 11 February 2008

A couple of speed cameras have been vandalised in the same area in only two days, it has been revealed.

Cameras in Widnes were set alight on Monday February 4th and Tuesday February 5th late in the evening, reports the Northwich Guardian.

Manager at the Cheshire Safer Roads Partnership Lee Murphy noted that the incident was an "odd" one and that he is disappointed with the actions of those responsible.

"Cameras slow down traffic to reduce the risk of accidents and play an important part of road safety. Why anyone would want to stop that is beyond me," he told the publication.

Vandals surrounded one of the devices with tyres before it was set on fire while the other was pulled to the ground.

Mr Murphy added that the cameras will eventually be replaced and that mobile capabilities could be used until that time.

Motorists caught speeding may find that their motor insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.

Last week, East Lothian council members said that they are in talks with safety officials regarding the introduction of more speed cameras in the area.
