Motor insurance: 'Car alarms useless' says expert

Wednesday, 06 December 2006

One automobile theft expert says that installing new security measures in your car is more useful than having an alarm in the quest against motor thieves.

A door lock guard or a laptop computer security box are both vital because picking locks with a screwdriver is a common tactic used by opportunist miscreants, according to Andy Mills who designs vehicle security systems for Auto Theft Merchandise.

He said: "Alarms don't do anything now because people ignore them. I have invented a door lock guard which stops the silent approach. This is where they put a screwdriver through the door lock. It goes over the lock."

Mr Mills estimates that two out of every three car owners which suffer screwdriver damage do not report it to the police because it does not solve anything except the pursuit of obtaining a crime report number for use in cheap motor insurance claims.

Last week it was revealed by one car insurance company's research that Bradford, Hull and Leeds are the worst UK cities in terms of car theft.
