More than a fifth of car insurance holders have purchased vehicles without taking them for a test drive, new research has shown.

According to a survey by Carmony.co.uk, 75 per cent of Brits feel out of their depth when it comes to buying a new set of wheels, with this lack of knowledge making the whole process an intimidating one.

More than a quarter of those surveyed said they regretted purchasing the vehicle soon after doing so.

The study found that many fail to make even basic checks before handing over their money, including things such as whether the windscreen wipers work or whether the headlights function properly.

With this in mind, Carmony.co.uk has created a buyer's guide designed to educate drivers looking for cheap car insurance of the steps they should take before deciding to buy a vehicle.

The survey follows research by the Office of Fair Trading which found that consumers need greater protection when it comes to buying a used car, with dealers urged to do more.
