Car insurance: Record numbers buy cars online

Wednesday, 31 March 2010

Record numbers of used car buyers are purchasing cars over the internet, new research by the UK's largest online used car retailer, Autoquake.com, has found.

Over the past three years, the number buying cars online has increased by 14 per cent, while conventional ways to buy used cars, including through franchised and independent dealers and car supermarkets, have decreased in popularity over the same period.

Car supermarkets appear to be faring worse than other conventional car buying methods, with a 17 per cent drop in popularity, according to the one Poll carried out on behalf of Autoquake.com.

Motorists who shop online for car insurance are likely to get the best and cheapest deals.

Research from Quidco, the cashback website, found that drivers who spend an hour on average shopping for a cheap car insurance quote can save two-and-a-half times more money than those spending only a few minutes searching.

Average savings of up to £100 can be made on car insurance quotes by those searching for longer, the research found.
