Motor insurance: Brits 'unsure' of overseas policies
Wednesday, 19 March 2008
A low proportion of British drivers are checking their motor insurance policies to see if they cover them while abroad, according to uSwitch.com.
In total, 17.2 million drivers do not know if their services will extend to overseas destinations, the organisation claimed.
Theft and accidents may not be taken into account by companies, it said, because European Union regulations mean that only third-party cover is provided.
Insurance expert at uSwitch.com Ashton Berkhauer urged consumers to look at the small print and think about expanding their deals so that they are not disappointed when they head abroad.
He commented: "Consumers should look at the level of cover on offer and watch out for any restrictive clauses as to the number of consecutive days a car can be driven abroad before the driver must return to the UK."
In related news, West Somerset Community College students were given a road safety lesson from fellow youngsters, something that could impact upon their motor insurance policies if they behave behind the wheel.
