The authorities appear to be cracking down on drivers without car insurance.

Drivers caught without car insurance are being given an ultimatum, a car insurance comparison site reports: purchase car insurance by the end of the year or face fines of up to £1,000.

Continuous Insurance Enforcement proposals recently submitted by the Department for Transport are expected to come into force by early 2011. These rules will prosecute car owners without car insurance even if they don't use the vehicle.

There are solutions for drivers who do not currently use their vehicles. Cars that have been unused and uninsured for over a year will be eligible for off-road storage and drivers can get official exemption from paying a car insurance premium.

Recent official statistics have suggested that over two million vehicles are driven uninsured across the country on an annual basis, the car insurance comparison site says.

10 per cent of drivers in built-up urban areas such as Manchester, Birmingham and London drive without a UK car insurance policy, according to the firm's statistics.

The minimum legal requirement to drive on British roads is third party car insurance. This only protects drivers from damage to third party vehicles and is the cheapest form of vehicle protection.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19557118-ADNFCR
