Car insurance holders will be happy to know that hundreds of dangerous drivers are no longer allowed to drive on Britain's roads.

However, while road users will be pleased at the removal of such dangerous drivers, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has expressed its displeasure at the news that thousands of motor insurance policyholders opted to drive in an intoxicated state during December.

It follows figures from the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), showing that over 7,000 drivers were arrested during a month-long drink-drive crackdown over the Christmas period.

This means that a ratio of 4.55 per cent out of those motorists who were breath-tested across the national campaign were arrested, while 5.73 per cent of drivers tested under the age of 25 were also caught.

The group added that the finding demonstrates the need for drink-drive and drug-driving education to be prioritised for the age group.

RoSPA's head of road safety Kevin Clinton said: "Drink driving kills and maims. Provisional figures show that 250 people were killed in drink-drive accidents on Great Britains roads in 2010 - accounting for 14 per cent of all road fatalities."
