Swiftcover.com cracks down on drivers who lie on car insurance

Friday, 17 September 2010

Insurer swiftcover.com will be cracking down on drivers who lie on their car insurance policies by checking the claims history of all applicants.

As many as ten per cent of people applying for a motor insurance policy fail to disclose all their previous claims, according to research from the insurer.

Drivers who cover up their claims history are likely to make further claims in the future.

The provider found that some 60 per cent of motorists who do not admit to having previous claims choose not to renew their policy with Swiftcover, suggesting they jump from insurer to insurer.

Steve Gaywood, swiftcover.com's counter fraud and compliance manager, said: "It is not fair that safe, law-abiding drivers should pay higher premiums to subsidise people who lie about their previous claims to get cheaper insurance. swiftcover.com's new check will help us identify people that have not fully disclosed their claims history and ensure that they are charged the appropriate price for their insurance."

Recently, swiftcover.com published a list of the top insurance claims tricks, including motorists trying to pass off old damage as part of a new insurance claim.
