A higher number of drivers could find cheap car insurance as road casualties are decreasing in the UK.

The latest set of figures from the Department for Transport reveal that the number of people killed and seriously injured on the nation's roads has dropped by eight per cent to 22,660.

Welcoming the data, the Institute of Advanced Motorists' director of policy and research Neil Greig said it is "great" news.

Mr Greig believes the partnership between government, local authorities, enforcement agencies and education bodies is saving lives in Britain.

However, he stresses that the challenge is now for the government to support post-test training, which can help lower car insurance and help to ensure that motorists are safer on the roads.

He explained that "every individual motorist has to take responsibility for their own road risk, whether that means improving their driving through further training, or simply by taking a bit more care".
