Car insurance customers have been reminded of the risk of car key theft, after vehicle recovery service Tracker revealed that 83 per cent of recovered cars were stolen using their owner's keys in the second quarter of 2010.

The company also discovered that the three most commonly stolen and recovered brands are Audi, Mercedes and BMW, although the Land Rover Discovery is also fast becoming a target for thieves.

However, this does not mean that car insurance customers with lower-end vehicles are safe from criminals, according to Stephen Doran, managing director for Tracker.

"Consumers are looking for used car bargains and thieves will shift their targets to suit demand, which means everyone needs to protect their vehicle from theft," he commented.

Earlier this year, the firm launched Tracker Locate, which incorporates GSM, GPS and VHF technology in a single unit, greatly improving the chances of recovering a stolen vehicle. ADNFCR-3010-ID-19947446-ADNFCR
