Car insurance customers should make sure they are not careless with their car and park in a well-lit area.

According to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), a rise in technology to improve car safety may have left some motorists complacent about their vehicles.

Advice from the organisation includes parking in a busy area, placing valuables out of view and ensuring the car has an alarm and immobiliser.

Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, told car insurance customers: "Never underestimate the determination of some thieves: don't leave your car keys in a bowl or on a rack by the door - one of the most common methods of stealing a car is using a pole to reach through the letterbox to get the keys."

It comes as the company produced its list of the most dangerous places to park, with Hull topping the list, followed by Nottingham, Bradford and Manchester.

This week Greater Manchester Police were also urging car insurance customers to lock their cars and keep safe after a carjacking in the area.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19612548-ADNFCR
