Drivers could find their car insurance is null and void if their car is stolen whilst left unattended.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) is warning road users to keep an eye on their cars running on cold mornings while the windows defrost. Doing this leaves you vulnerable to thieves.

Lancashire Police recently received reports of 27 cars left in this way in just a two-hour period, while earlier this week four vehicles were taken in Greater Manchester after being abandoned by their owner.

Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "Don't leave your vehicle with the engine running to warm up, while you nip back inside - even if it is only for a couple of minutes, as it only takes seconds for thieves to strike."

The worst news of all could be that drivers who find their vehicle stolen after leaving it to defrost are likely to be left with invalid insurance due to their own negligence.

Mark Humphries of Devon and Cornwall Police this week stated that leaving keys in an unmanned car leaves a policy null and void.ADNFCR-3010-ID-19544519-ADNFCR
