Car insurance: CCTV parking wardens introduced

Tuesday, 08 August 2006

New CCTV parking cameras could help to reduce illegal parking and insurance for car owners.

A total of 20 cameras are to be installed in areas on central London as part of an initiative to cut down on congestion within the city. However, the new cameras could also help to reduce car crime and eventually help to reduce car insurance quotes.

The cameras will be able to film cars parked in unsuitable locations and drivers will automatically be sent a fine in the post.

Councillor Danny Chalkley explained: "Our pilot scheme proved that CCTV is reliable and cost-effective. CCTV cameras mean more tickets will be right first time.

"Westminster remains the leading authority in parking enforcement that continues to improve and be firm, fair and excellent."

Westminster City Council will be introducing the new system alongside an awareness campaign, with drivers receiving a warning rather than a fine for the first three weeks.
