Changes to local road work laws

Monday, 30 January 2012

Changes to the ways in which local authorities can advertise road works, and when and where they are going to take place, will make it easier to target people who need to know about disruptions.

As part of the new changes to how local authorities conduct road works and other traffic matters, the Department for Transport (DfT) has said that they will no longer have to advertise what they are about to do in local newspapers, as they do now.

Instead, councils will be able to tell car insurance customers by whichever way they see fit about upcoming road works in the area, meaning that those who will be affected can be targeted better.

According to Norman Baker of the DfT,  "Councils and the Highways Agency should have the freedom to use their local knowledge to decide how best to do this rather than being forced to spend taxpayers’ money on indiscriminate advertising."

Last week, councils were also given the right to charge companies who want to dig up roads for works in the middle of prime times, to encourage more companies to work quickly or at night.
