Drivers who scrimp on tyres could be putting themselves and their
car insurance premiums in danger, according to one magazine.
What Car? carried out a series of tests on a selection of budget tyres compared with three premium brands, with some shocking results that could raise car insurance concerns.
The premium tyres tested were Michelin, Goodyear and Continental, while at around half the price on average, the three budget brands were Arrowspeed, Ovation and Sunew.
In wet conditions, the budget tyres took an average of 14 metres, or the length of an articulated lorry, longer to come to a stop from 70mph than their more expensive counterparts.
Meanwhile, dry conditions did not show up the disparity as noticeably, but the worst budget tyre still took five metres longer to stop than the best premium brand - which could make all the difference between a narrow escape and a car insurance claim.
