The inclusion of a conservatory can add significant value to a property, an expert has claimed, so it may be imperative for homeowners to check their home insurance policy covers the installation.

Conservatories must be of sufficient quality, carefully planned and properly funded, has recommended.

Stephen Dyer, managing director at the website, said: "The best conservatories seamlessly interact with adjacent rooms and the garden without unsightly step-over threshold bars or changes in floor level."

Mr Dyer emphasised that a conservatory's effect is entirely positive because they boost homes with secondary-value leisure space.

However, such an installation comes with the added security risk of items being on show, as well as the potential for burst water pipes in winter if the conservatory is not properly heated.

Mr Dyer also warned that conservatories which are not correctly thought-through can lead to existing rooms lacking identity or proper functions, which could make a home less desirable when it is sold on.
