More people may be checking their home insurance policies to see if new conservatories, extensions and conversions are covered.

This is because the home improvement industry is on the up, despite the short-term outlook not looking bright, Homebuilding and Renovating has stressed.

According to Homebuilding and Renovating editor Jason Orme, home extension projects have been "relatively strong" in recent months, while there are some encouraging signs from the new homes market.

Mr Orme explained that the benefit of improving a house is that it allows a family to grow without having to move to a larger home.

He added: "Families keep on growing and needs keep on changing. As a result, people may well temporarily suspend a major homes purchase, but they will [do it eventually]."

Property owners should remember to check their home insurance policies to see if they need to take out extra cover for any extensions or conversions.
