Travel insurance: Parisian Christmas shopping can rival New York

Thursday, 19 November 2009

While New York is still the most popular Christmas shopping destination for travel insurance customers, Paris and Bulgaria are giving the Big Apple a run for its money.

Lonely Planet has revealed European destinations are becoming increasingly popular for shoppers looking for a festive getaway.

"Paris' more accessible big-name stores and countless tiny boutiques are giving New York a run for its money," said Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall.

He added that "budget-minded travellers" are now heading to cities like Istanbul "which offer distinctive, quality products without eurozone prices".

For those hoping to combine shopping with sunshine this winter, Mr Hall recommended Marrakech, which "offers great shopping with a dash of the exotic".

And Buenos Aires makes a good long-haul option adds Mr Hall, who said the city is a great place "to bag a bargain" and offers "fantastic food".

As for those looking for a more traditional seasonal shopping experience, Mr Hall said a visit to one of the many Christmas markets of northern Europe is well worth it.
