Car insurance holders could benefit from new clamping laws
Friday, 20 August 2010
Car insurance policyholders stand to benefit from the introduction of new clamping regulations by the government.
Wheel clampers will be banned from operating on private land in England and Wales, which could lead to fewer motor insurance customers falling victim to clamping.
The legislation is due to be introduced in November.
It will result in anyone clamping or towing vehicles away from private land facing tougher penalties than at present - either fines or prison sentences.
Private land clamping is said to be worth around £1 billion each year and there has been widespread concern that some companies use under-handed tactics or demand extortionate fees from car insurance holders caught parking in the wrong places.
However, not everyone was pleased with the new plans. Patrick Troy, chief executive of the British Parking Association, said: "The government's plans are a charter for the selfish parker. We urge the Home Office to tightly regulate the private parking sector, instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water."
