Drivers who are seeking cheap car insurance have been advised to tidy their vehicles and ensure that valuables are out of sight.

This is the recommendation from Devon and Cornwall Police, who are telling motorists to beware that thieves are often searching for possessions that are easily visible.

Local newspaper the Herald Express reports that the appeal was triggered after nearly 40 cars were targeted in the Teign Estuary during the last month.

The police have said that the problem is being exacerbated due to motor insurance customers who are leaving car doors unlocked and valuable items on display.

Devon and Cornwall Police have outlined the most sought after items, which are SatNavs, MP3 systems, mobile phones, laptops, jewellery and vehicle registration documents.

Also, the issue is not limited to car insurance customers in the south-west of England.

This is because the Wishaw Press has reported that police in Scotland are urging motorists not to leave items on show in their cars after a "spate" of vehicle crimes at Strathclyde Park.
