Residents living in Northumberland are being told to secure their property and make sure that they have the right level of contents insurance for their home.

Local newspaper for the region, The Journal, reported that a third of all the house burglaries which took place in the county during a nine-month period were committed at homes that hadn't been properly secured.

Northumbria Police stated that they responded to 390 domestic break-ins in the county between April and December in 2011.

Of this number, as many as 160 properties were found to be unsecure, with doors or windows left unlocked â€" a condition that could violate the cover detailed on many home insurance policies.

Det Chief Inspector Peter Reeve said: "What's concerning is the number of reports where burglars have simply tried their luck and managed to get into homes through unlocked doors and windows."

There are many things that homeowners can do to improve the security of their property, including upgrading windows and doors which are not in good condition and using strong padlocks on garages.
